4 - The ambition for Circular Glasgow

Our Vision.

The City of Glasgow’s vision is to become one of the world’s first circular cities. Its ambition is to create a movement to inspire businesses of all sizes to innovate and become future-proof by adopting circular strategies. Circular Glasgow’s vision serves to motivate people, and has proved essential to successfully driving change.

Glasgow Chamber of Commerce hosts Circular Glasgow and is responsible for delivering this initiative alongside key stakeholders: Zero Waste Scotland, Glasgow City Council and Circle Economy. Circular Glasgow is funded by the European Regional Development Fund. It sets out a circular economy vision for Glasgow, together with practical steps for the city and business community that works towards supporting economic development, increasing competitive advantage, resource recovery and reuse, and carbon reductions.

Our Partners:

"Glasgow Chamber of Commerce – through our initiative Circular Glasgow – is committed to helping our business community and city stakeholders transition to a circular economy. For business we see this as being all about innovation and becoming future proof within the global context of leading the necessary changes because of the climate change emergency. Businesses adopting circular economy strategies and new business models- particularly through design, new technologies and unexpected collaborations- is one of the most significant ways of driving this change and making a better society with enough for all.

Circular Glasgow is proud to be a trailblazer with some of its work and fully intends to continue its pioneering approach - with our partners - to scale activity across the city to take it to the next phase. We all have to act now!"

Glasgow Chamber of Commerce

“Circular Glasgow has played a valuable role in raising the profile of circular economy and the opportunities it offers for business growth, innovation and resilience. On a practical level, Circular Glasgow has galvanised the local business community, supporting small and medium-sized firms to reduce waste and cut costs to make the best use of our precious resources.

As our first sustainable city project, Circular Glasgow has also shaped the way we have rolled out similar schemes across the country. Circular Tayside, Circular North East and Circular Edinburgh are all now underway and benefit from the experience gleaned from Glasgow.

With the commitment made by Glasgow City Council to develop a CE routemap, and positive activity being led by a number of city stakeholders as a result of engagement through Circular Glasgow, Zero Waste Scotland will continue to work collaboratively to drive and embed CE in Glasgow.”

“In a few years, circular design will be the norm. But right now we need industry and government to work together to make sure that happens.

That’s why Circular Glasgow is so important. As we develop and implement our Circular Economy routemap, and as we deepen our partnerships, Glasgow will become one of the first truly circular city economies.”

"Over the past four years, Glasgow has well and truly positioned itself as a pioneer and hotspot of the circular economy on the UK continent. Circular Glasgow has been at the forefront of the city’s circular journey, stimulating circular thinking within the Glasgow’s business community, identifying practical opportunities to implement circularity, and putting the city on the International stage. Just like Glasgow’s circular transition, we look forward to seeing our close partnership with Circular Glasgow continue to grow in the years to come, with more impact to be made."
