1 - The big picture

Glasgow and Scotland are trailblazers amidst the global circular economy movement.

Coupled with Scotland's first circular economy strategy to Make Things Last, the country has also pledged to stop contributing to climate change within a generation under new, tough climate proposals. Amendments to the Climate Change Bill have been lodged to set a legally binding target of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2045 with Scotland seeking to become carbon neutral by 2040 and declaring a climate change emergency.

More recently, following on from this, Glasgow has announced its partnership with ScottishPower with an ambition to be the first 'net zero' city in the UK. Scotland is aiming to reach net-zero by 2045, but Glasgow has unveiled plans to get there sooner.

The circular economy is one of the key ways to effect the changes required and work towards reaching these targets.
