Circular Glasgow's next phase, supported by ERDF and Zero Waste Scotland, was to work directly with local businesses, supporting the adoption of their own circular ambitions.

Whether organisations are just starting their journey to circularity or already have circular processes in place, Circular Glasgow's tailored programme of support was designed to help Glasgow businesses measure their current levels of circular activity, inspire them to consider the adoption of circular ideas and finally, implement them.

Inspiring circularity:

Events

In June 2016, Circular Glasgow hosted its first multi-stakeholder summit to launch the City Circle Scan report and deepen understanding of circular economy opportunities.

Circular Glasgow has since hosted a series of events, engaging with a range of Glasgow based businesses. Other events include: Circular Glasgow Showcase Event and Circular Economy Hotspot Scotland.

Sector-specific events

In Scotland, the construction sector is responsible for over 50% of our resource consumption as a whole.8

The Mini Summit, influencer dinner and the Circular Economy and Cities Report demonstrated how the construction sector could play a role in future-proofing our urban landscape.

Circular Hub

As part of a bid for Glasgow to become a leading circular city, Circular Glasgow, brought one of the world’s most sustainable buildings to the city centre as part of an informative hub inspiring the city’s citizens to rethink, reuse, repair and recycle.

Circular Glasgow, social media platforms and media have all proved key in helping to inspire widespread adoption of the circular economy, sharing with a global audience of 39 million to date.

Measuring circularity:

Circular Workforce

In 2017, Circular Glasgow commissioned the first study to measure the baseline number of circular jobs throughout the city's boundaries.

Circle Assessments

Whether Glasgow’s organisations have already started to implement circular business strategies, or have just begun their transformation to become more circular, this simple online tool helps to diagnose how an organisation’s current practices match up to their circular objectives.

The results of the tool score companies on their current circular thinking as well as educates them on potential circular opportunities to explore further.

Workshops

Full day workshops delivered by Circular Glasgow were also designed to actively encourage the development of new circular business models and innovative products and services.

Circular Glasgow has engaged on a 1-2-1 basis with locally based organisations, resulting in business support referrals.

More than half a million people were reached by the Glasgow Circle Lab Challenge

Circle Lab Challenge:

As a way of crowdsourcing ideas as well as increasing public and SME engagement, Glasgow was the first city globally to host a Circle Lab Challenge reaching over 600,000 people, across 13 countries.

Asking citizens and companies from cities across the world how local businesses can improve the economic, environmental and social legacy of major city events and conferences, three winning ideas were identified.

Ideas included a deposit-based reuse system for food and drink containers, circular designs for event marketing and branding, and a scheme that will repurpose organic waste into energy and fertilisers.
